Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank as model 222-62-09. Constructors Number 5245. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38E Lightning serial number 41-2027. Wartime History Assigned to the 11th Air Force (11th AF) in Alaska. Mission History During late 1942, this P-38 crashed at the end of Cold Bay Airfield. Afterwards, stripped for usable parts and buried. Officially condemned on October 28, 1942. Wreckage This P-38 was buried at Cold Bay Airfield. During 1987, the wreckage was excavated by Dick Odgers. Restoration The recovered parts were later acquired by Hill Aerospace Museum and used in the restoration of P-38J 42-67638 that was restored by Ed Kaleta of San Diego.
