Built by Grumman as Model G-50 in Bethpage, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F6F-3 Hellcat bureau number 40691.

Wartime History
Assigned to USS Lexington (CV-16) to Fighting Squadron 16 (VF-16). No known nickname or nose art.

Mission History
On April 1, 1944 took off from USS Lexington (CV-16) pilot Ensign Arthur W. Spindler on a strike against Woleai. When this aircraft failed to return it was declared Missing in Action (MIA).

Memorials
Spindler was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing.
