Pilot Ensign William George Wagner, 301502 (rescued, KIA) Dayton, OH Force Landed November 28, 1950 Aircraft History Built by Vought. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F4U-5P Corsair bureau number 122169. Wartime History Assigned to USS Leyte CV-32 to Composite Squadron 62 (VC-62). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On November 28, 1950 took off from USS Leyte CV-32 on a patrol mission over North Korea. Over the target, hit by anti-aircraft fire and crash landed in northwest North Korea. Wagner survived unhurt and walked away from the wreckage to await rescue by helicopter. Rescue Responding, H-5H Dragonfly 49-2009 arrived and landed to rescue Wagner. While returning to base, this helicopter ran out of fuel and crashed into the into mountains 25 miles northwest of Pyongyang killing all three in the crash. Memorials Wagner earned the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. Wagner has an unknown burial likely in his hometown in the United States. References Previously, Wagner crash landed piloting F4U-5P Corsair 122170 on October 7, 1950 and was rescued.
