It is thought that this aircraft might be a Corsair which crash
landed just outside the lagoon at Midway on June 21, 1943. Smith was rescued
at sea by a Midway based PT Boat.
Discovery
In the summer of 1997, tourist
divers exploring the ocean off Midway,
, discovered this aircraft, upside-down on a sandy bottom in
clear water.
