IJN ? Kōkūtai |
Aircraft History Built by Aichi at Watanabe Iron Works. True serial number unknown. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 Reconnaissance Seaplane / E13A1 Reisen Shiki Sui Tei (Jake) manufacture number unknown. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group), likely 958 Kōkūtai (958 Air Group). This Jake operated from Shortland Harbor Seaplane Base. Abandoned or sunk in Tuha Channel off Korovou (Korouvo) on Shortland Island. Wreckage This aircraft was abandoned or sunk in shallow water and rests on both pontoons. The tail section is missing. The propeller is missing and the engine has broken off from its mount and is resting on the bottom. The water visibility varies due to the proximity to shore. Chris Cowx adds: "Missing the tail but was otherwise intact including the cockpit interior, floats, wings, etc. It is sitting on it's floats and is in about 15' of water which means that the uppermost parts are only about 5' down. The engine and cowling was resting in front of it but the plane was sitting on the bottom on its floats as if parked. References Pacific Aircraft Wrecks page 49 (middle & lower photos) Contribute
