Aircraft History
Built by Aichi, completed during late October 1943. Uncoded serial number unknown (three digits). Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 99 Carrier Bomber (Kanbaku) / D3A2 Model 22 manufacture number unknown. This aircraft was the 474th D3A2 Model 22 built.

Wartime History
Crashed near Guma village near Open Bay.

Jim Lansdale adds:
"A late production Val 22 after Aichi switched s/n coding to this system (1xx0, 2xx8, 3xx7, 4xx8, 5xx5, 6xx4, 7xx3, 8xx2, 9xx1) or it is a Showa-constructed Val. This is an AICHI Val Model 22, constructed after the system changed from 3xxx to the later system where the first digit and the fourth digit was eithe 1xx0 or could be added to to yield 10."

Jim Long adds:
"The numeral 6 at the left of the M/N tells us that Aichi had switched to their version of the ten-cycle coding system for creating manufacture numbers during October 1943. With this evidence I can zero in on the possible date on which Aichi switched from the 3000 base number to the ten-cycle system of encoding the manufacture numbers. It seems that happened during the last ten days of October 1943. I'll be able to confirm the time period when I've studies the question a little more and have made a few calculations. I'll have to revise my tables, too."
