Mission History
On July 29, 1944 took off from A-5 (APO 210) on a bombing mission against Anshan in Manchuria. The weather was unlimited visibility with a thin cloud layer at 20,000'. Aboard, this B-29 experienced electrical problems and their radio would not transmit. Last seen at 12:04 over Kaiping in Manchuria and did not appeared to be in good condition with no engines feathered or obvious problems. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). In fact, this B-29 proceeded towards Vladivostok and landed at Tsentral’naya Uglovaya Airfield (Uglovoye) near Vladivostok a Soviet Navy base.

After landing, this bomber was retained by the Soviet Union as the first example of a B-29 Superfortress, a type the United States declined to send to the USSR under lend lease. To study the bomber, Stalin ordered Admiral Nikolai G. Kuznetsov, People’s Commissar for Naval Affairs and Commander of the Soviet Navy to conduct flight tests and study the heavy bomber.

Fates of the Crew
The crew were interred by the Soviet Union and were detained until repatriated via Iran to the Allies.
