Aircraft History
Built by North American Aviation (NAA). Constructors Number 87-8483. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-25D-10 Mitchell serial number 41-30318. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Converted into a B-25D-1 strafer version by the 4th Air Depot at Garbutt Field in Townsville.

Wartime History
Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 3rd Bombardment Group (3rd BG), 90th Bombardment Squadron (90th BS). No known nickname or nose art. When lost, engines R-2600-13 serial numbers 41-29252 and 42-27778. Weapon serial numbers noted in MACR.

Mission History
On October 30, 1943 took off from Horanda Drome (Dobodura 4) piloted by 1st Edward A. Murphy, Jr. on a search and bombing mission against Vitu Island Group (Witu). While over the eastern side of Garowe Island (Garove) near Ndoll village, this B-25 was hit by anti-aircraft fire in one engine. Damaged, it crash into the sea off Genta Bay on the western side of the island. Last sighted by two crew members aboard another B-25. When this plane failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA).

John C. Bogoe adds:
"The flight I was flying in was leaving Garove Island and I was watching Lt. Murphy's plane 41-30318 flying on one engine. He was about 100 yards off shore and I saw the airplane pancake into the water. The last I saw was a big splash.

Memorials
The entire crew was declared dead the day of the mission. All are memorialized on the tablets of the missing at Manila American Cemetery. Thayer also has a memorial marker at Church of the Redeemer Cemetery in Bryn Mawr, PA at plot lot 492.
