Aircraft History Built by North American Aviation (NAA) in Inglewood. Constructors Number 82-5123. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-25C Mitchell serial number 41-12488. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History On April 1, 1942 transferred to the Neatherlands East Indies Air Force (NEIAF) but never delivered nor assigned a serial number. Instead, retained by the U.S. Army in Australia. On April 30, 1942 assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 3rd Bombardment Group (3rd BG), 13th Bombardment Squadron (13th BS). Assigned to Captain Harold V. Maull. Nicknamed "El Diablo II" ("The Devil II" in Spansih). This was the second B-25 in the squadron with this nickname, previously B-25C "El Diablo" 41-12511 and afterwards B-25C "El Diablo III" 41-13088. During 1942-1943 this B-25 operated from northern Australia and Port Moresby and flew combat missions in New Guinea. On September 24, 1942 took off from Port Moresby escorted by ten Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-40E Kittyhawks from No. 75 Squadron led by F/Lt Piper and landed between 11:19am to 11:28am at Horn Island Airfield. The ultimate fate of this bomber is unknown, likely written off and scrapped.
