Mission History
Part of a B-24 formation whose target was Rangoon. Shortly after dropping their bombs, the plane began losing altitude and the #2 engine was out. A-A fire was moderate and apparently Wiley's plane had been hit. The haze was pretty thick and heavy, and sight of Wiley's plane was lost. It failed to return to base.
Susan Gifford adds:
"Government records which I obtained about 10 years ago indicate that the plane crashed in the jungle and all of the crew survivied. They were captured by Burmese nationals and turned over to the Japanese. They were transported to Rangoon. Rangoon was liberated one month later, April 29, 1945. No trace of any of the crew was ever found."
