Wartime History Assigned to the 11th Air Force (11th AF), 28th Bombardment Group (28th BG), 36th Bombardment Squadron (36th BS). No known nose art or nickname. Mission History On June 4, 1942 took off piloted by Captain Thomas F. Mansfield on a bombing mission against Japanese warships roughly 200 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. This B-17 made a bombing attack from 800' against the warships but was shot down by Takao before getting into range. When this B-17 failed to return from the mission it was officially declared Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials The entire crew was officially declared dead on January 12, 1946. All are memorialized at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing on court 7. The entire crew is also memorialized at the Memorial To The Missing in Anchorage, AK. Berman also has a memorial marker at Silk City Benevolent Association Cemetery, Woodland Park, NJ. Slocum also has a memorial marker at Ellendale City Cemetery in Ellendale, ND. Paul also has a memorial marker at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD at MA site 2. Bottelson also has a memorial marker at Riverside Cemetery in Blue Earth, MN. Hellenbrand also has a memorial marker at Saint Peters Cemetery in Ashton, WI.
