Pilot ? Ditched January 20, 1943 Aircraft History Built by either Mitsubishi or Nakajima. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as A6M2 Model 21 Zero manufacture number unknown. Wartime History Assigned to Junyō. Tail code unknown. On January 17, 1943, one of twenty three A6M2 Zeros and six B5N2 Kates commanded by Lt Cdr Takashi Hashiguch flown from Kavieng Airfield to Wewak Airfield (Wirui Airfield). These aircraft were part of Operation MV to provide convoy protection as part of Hei I with the Zeros flying Combat Air Patrol (CAP) over Wewak. Wartime History On January 20, 1943 took off from Wewak Airfield (Wirui Airfield) on a mission to intercept B-24D Liberator 41-24101 on a solo reconnaissance over Wewak. Damaged by the bomber's gunners, this Zero ditched into Wewak Harbor. Fate of the pilot unknown, likely returned to duty. Wreckage Zero ditched in Wewak Harbor is likely this aircraft.
