Wartime History
Crashed near Albury.
Wreckage
No serial number could be found, although
the aircraft is definitely a G model, with the rear turret.
Michael Claringbould visited the site in 1998:
"Local folklore has it that 3 or 4 were
aboard and their corpses were carried out by horseback the
next day. I have written to CILHI and asked them to send
out the deceased personnel file for 2/Lt Walter H. Ford of
5th AF 4th Air Depot. There is still much of the wreck there,
but can you believe it, some bloody idiot winched out the engines about four
months ago,
presumably as souvenirs. The site is relatively easy to get to, but you'd need
someone to show you where it is. I suspect it served with the 3rd Attack at some
stage, and if it crashed in 1945 then it was probably serving with CRTC. Either
way, it would have a combat history. Who would have believed an A-20 was around
here?"
