Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as A-20G-25-DO Havoc serial number 43-9391. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled by the 4th Air Depot at Garbutt Field. Wartime History On March 20, 1944 assigned to the 312th Bombardment Group, 387th Bombardment Squadron at Hollandia via Cairns, Horn Island, 7-Mile Drome to Nadzab Airfield. Assigned to pilot Captain John C. Alsup with crew chief Slavin. Nicknamed "Pistol Packin' Mama". During early 1944, transferred to the 417th Bombardment Group (417th BG). On July 4, 1944 while parked at Nadzab Airfield, this aircraft was being serviced in a ravetment. A battery spark started a fire in the bomb bay loaded with four 500 pound bombs. The ground crew ran for cover as the plane caught fire and exploded, damaging ten nearby A-20 Havocs including A-20G Havoc 43-21627.
