Pilot P/O Arthur Douglas Nelson, 405874 (survived) Force Landed April 24, 1942 Aircraft History Built by Curtis in Buffalo, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Army as serial number 41-5346. On November 5, 1941 assigned to "Project X". Disassembled and shipped overseas bound for the Philippines. Instead delivered to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the Far East Air Force (FEAF), 33rd Pursuit Squadron. Assigned to pilot Lt. Richard Pingree. No known nickname or nose art. At Port Pirie Airfield, this P-40 required repairs and was unable to join the ferry flight bound for Darwin. Instead, this aircraft remained at the airfield awaiting repairs. During March 1942, assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) with serial number A29-68. Assigned to No. 75 Squadron, but was instead allocated to No. 76 Squadron on April 1, 1942. Mission History On April 24, 1942 crashed landed at Weir Airfield near Mount Black roughly 25km from Townsville, pilot survived, but aircraft was burnt out and written off.
